A massive Orc covered head to toe in divine runes. Usually seen wearing only a loincloth, but never without his great rune etched hammer by his side.
Born as the 2nd son to the chief of the Bloodsteel Clan, he would have been destined to a life of court intrigue and arranged marraiges had he been born human, elven, or both. Haplo was not born human however, but full-blown orc. By age 5, it was clear Haplo was a born leader, and he quickly over-shadowed his older brother as clear successor of the Bloodsteel Clan, even st such a young age. His brother Thulrak was a brute if nothing else, and short tempered, even for an orc.
It was no surprise that, 5 years later, he made his first attempt at taking Haplo’s life. Had it not been for the sheer luck, or perhaps divine intervention of Haplo taking in a stray mutt earlier that day, Thulrak would have succeeded. As it stanfs, Thulrak was caught off guard by a rather protective and determined dog, who did not want to see his new master, meal ticket, and warm bed taken from him. After a short but bloody struggle, Thulrak was forced to abort his plan and rin off to lick his wounded arm and pride before he was seen. The dog was not so lucky, having given its life protecting Haplo.
It was barely more than a week later when Thulrak tried again. This time publicly, by challenging Haplo to a fight to the death for the rights to become the next chief. Haplo was only 10, and fighting his much older and larger brother was nothing short of a death sentence, but to refuse would be almost the same, as he would be branded a coward and exiled from the clan.
The fight was shaping up to be just as brief as everyone expected. Haplo fought well, delivering a few of his own telling hits, but he was no match for Thurak. However, after a rather crippling blow, as Haplo lay on his back, coughing up blood, his chest started glowing blue just over his heart and the wound closed over as everyone watched. Haplo stood, looking as comfused as everyone else, and jumped back into the fight. A few moments later, the strange occurance happened again, except this time, the blue glow coalesced into a blue rune etched into his skin just over his heart, and once again, Haplo rose to face his brother in a combat that now looked as though it may never end.
Thulrak was furious now, and completely beyond reason as he threw himself into the fight full force, quickly dispatching Haplo once more. This time it appeared Haplo’s divine luck had run out, as he lay panting on the ground, bleeding once more. Thulrak was not exactly in peak condition himself anymore, bleeding from many wounds himself as he leaned over his younger, his confident, cocky grin plastered back across his face. Leaning in close, so no one else could hear, Thulrak smiled wide as he described in gruesome detail how he slaughtered Haplo’s dog.
Yelling out in fury, Haplo lunged suddenly, as his brothered stared in shock, eyes trained on the rune burned into his younger brother’s chest as it changed from blue to red. He never saw the death blow coming, didnt even have time to react before Haplo’s hammer caved in the side of his skull. Thulrak died in a spray of blood, violently baptizing his younger brother in his own viscera as his body slumped over, still as a stone.
Before even his father, the chief could stand and make an announcement, the clan priest stepped forward, and declared Haplo a Rune Priest initiate, and that he must leave immediately on a quest to discover the full use of his powers.
As Haplo left, mere hours after killing his own brother, the last words he spoke to his father were to promise him that he would return a fully learned Rune Priest to become the first clan chief to also be a priest…..
